The test is divided into three sections:

1. Language Knowledge (Vocabulary & Grammar)

   • Vocabulary (文字・語彙):

   • Grammar & Reading (文法・読解):

     • Grammar and Reading sections combined contribute 60 marks.

2. Listening (聴解):

   • Listening Section:
     • Worth approximately 60 marks.
     • Usually includes 20-25 questions.

Marking Per Question:

The JLPT does not officially disclose the exact marks allocated to each question. However, the scoring system uses scaled scores rather than raw scores. Each question's value depends on the difficulty level and the performance of test-takers.

• As a rough guide, each question might carry 1-3 marks depending on its weight.

Passing Criteria:

To pass N5:

• Total Score: At least 80/180.
• Sectional Minimums:
  • Language Knowledge: At least 38/120.
  • Listening: At least 19/60.

This ensures you perform reasonably well across all sections, even if your overall score is high.
